Comprehensive analysis

John Reese - Person of interest 
John Reese is a character in the TV drama ‘person of interest’ a former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier and CIA field officer, who is presumed dead. Little is known about Reese's background, and his name is one of several aliases he uses. He lost his lover, Jessica, prior to meeting Finch, which appears to have marked him deeply. Reese demonstrates skill in the use of a range of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and surveillance tactics. He knows very little about Finch and is often rebuffed when he attempts to learn more about him.

John can be seen as a middle class actor, this is because he works for Finch who is in the government and controls all the cameras in the state. Another spectacle that adds to his middle class look is the clothing he wears to work, Mr Reese is always dressed in suits, and overall his appearance looks very professional. For his work he usually takes down criminals by himself because he is a very skilled worker. He always talks very calm and he’s never nervous which can add effect to the fact he is so skilled in what he does. Reese also speaks with clear standard pronunciation which can be shown in this clip
 

This next clip I have can show Johns fighting ability, this adds to his representation of being a very skilled fighter. In the face the character looks neat and smart also. in the first clips he is fighting a big bald man, john uses strength, skill and speed to make him unconsious.

we arent shown any of his background, for example where he lives and his family, only his work within the force, this is because he has been living when people think he is actually dead. Therefore we cant examine his quality of life.



Jr Ewing - Dallas
Jr Ewing is an extremely rich man, he is a middle class worker and owns an oil field. the owning of the oil field can shows the audience that he has alot of money. Ambitious and anxious to prove himself by following in his father's footsteps, he is determined to start drilling for oil at Southford. Also we are shown clips of jr Ewings house, he has a huge house with a swimming pool, this can show ther audience he spends alot of money and has a high income. This video has a variet of clips of him, they can show us his 'cowboy' accent. We are shown that the character always dresses smart, he wears different kinds of suits, this can indicate his importance and also his wealth because wealthy men usually dress in suits.

  

Jr Ewing also seems to be a humorous character at times two, a funny quote he has said is 'she will be better than the slut I'm looking at now' John Ross can also be seen as a stuck up character, this is because he knows he has a lot of money and he speaks to other characters harshly because he see's himself as higher up than them.

This photo of J.R Ewing can show us a lot about his character, he is pointing at his huge house behind him and he has a big smile on his face. This could suggest he is very proud of his wealth and isn't afraid to show it either. 

we know the character is middle aged because he still works however, we are unsure on his background, he is following in his fathers footsteps, this can tell the audience that his father was also a rich man so he would had have wealth throughout his whole childhood.

Editing

Continuity –The viewer should not notice the cuts, and shots should flow together naturally. Hence, the sequence of shots should appear to be continuous.

this scene from bourne ultimatum is a clear example of continuity, especially as we are shown him jumping from a window ledge into another room smoothly.

Hollywood Montage - a "montage sequence" is a short segment in a film in which narrative information is presented in a condensed fashion.

this is a perfect example of a montage from the movie Rocky III, it shows him improving over a long period of time cut into a few minutes which is effective.

Cross Cutting/parallel editing - Editing that alternates shots of two or more lines of action occurring in different places, usually simultaneously.
this is a perfect example of cross cutting from the film james bond quantum of solace.

in this scene we are shown a clear dissolving between two scenes which adds good effect

Sound - Clip 10 & 12 Brief Summary

Sunshine:
the sounds we hear in accompany to the spaceship are quite strange sounds like whale noises, this could indicate that space is weird and no body actually knows what it sounds like because its a vacuum.

the exterior sounds differ from those that are created within the interior of the spaceship, this is because the non diegetic sound effects outside of the ship are louder and more powerful, however inside the ship they are quite fast yet not powerful.

the sounds in the interior spaceship relate to what we see, this is because the man that comes out the shuttle looks hot, trampy, exhausted and drained, this links well with the blooded handprint we see in the scene because it creates a tense atmosphere due to the fact we know somebody has died.

the music that runs through the extract is

• fast
• powerful
• loud
• overwhelming

this builds up a tense atmosphere because you don't know whats going to happen next, all the audience know is that the shuttle is going towards the sun. it also raising the tempo.

Rat catcher:

we are shown an abstract image of a boy wrapping himself in a curtain, this is something alot of children did when they were little however the sound creates a different impression. the sounds we hear are faint, strange sounds of children laughing and playing, however Ryan is inside alone in the curtain. this could suggest that he is hiding himself away from the others with the use of the curtain, however this isn't the case.

we are introduced to the real world after this when Ryans mum slaps his head and tells him to stop doing that. when this happens the non diegetic music stops and we are instantly brought into the real atmosphere which can make it seem like he has snapped out of a dream to what he wants to be doing, playing like what all children love to do.

when Ryan runs away from his mother and untucks his flares from his boots, we are introduced to some slow music, i believe this music is trying to tell the audience what he is doing is wrong, and something bad will happen, a sound to show bad things to come.

when we are shown Ryan and his friend James playing, and another clip of Ryans mum buying shoes, we are introduced to parallel sound. the sound in each scene is different, in the playing scene the music is happy and enjoyable which can emphasise that they are having fun, however music with no rhythm and slightly dull is in the shoe scene.

when James pushes Ryan further into the water and the bubbles are shown from the top, we instantly have the impression he is going to drowned, the music turns to seriousness which builds up an atmosphere of anxiousness because we are hoping that he doesnt drown because he is only a child 

Sound - Hunger Clip 9

Activity 1
in this activity we have been told to write down all of the sounds we can hear in it, my list was

• birds
• breathing
• foot steps
• keys dangling
• chairs scraping
• breathing audibly heard to stop
• singing on the bus 

these sounds create an atmosphere that i find hard to explain, it creates a quite awkward atmosphere because without diegetic sound it is hard to interact with the film properly. the noises are all harsh as well, by this i mean they are loud and disturbing like the loud slamming of doors, and the scraping of chairs.

Activity 2

when there is only silence the camera is focusing on the dying man in the film, we have been told that he is starving to death. we are gradually shown how weak he is getting and his extreme struggle for energy. for example we are shown the dying mans eye lid opening and closing as he struggles to see, we can even hear this which is very disturbing and strange to watch, and also it shows us the state he is actually in. the silence can be seen to add effect to how his life will be coming to an end, to silence.

Activity 3

the key sounds of birds and breathing relate to the story that unfolds in many ways. to begin with the disturbing slow loud breathing emphasises his struggle he is facing and his verge to death. also when we are shown Bobby as a child running in the woods, we are shown a sound of birds scattering around, Bobby had been running for a while and the set had started to get dark, by this time Bobby is lost and doesn't know his way back, and he continues to run. this foreshadows his life now, because he is in this state and there is just no turning back, and he knows he's going to die. 

the Crows in the trees could possibly represent the rural area that was what he lived in when he was younger, and this could link to not being well thought of as a child, this is because rural areas usually don't have many services because the demand isn't needed as much. this could represent Bobby not being loved and thought about as a child as well.

the heavy exhausting breathing of Bobby when he is running through the woods could be seen as a contrast to the state he is in now, this is because in the woods he is exhausted but continues running which can show he is fit, where as in the clip of him as an adult, he is shown to be weak, with heavy slow breathing, drained of energy, this shows what the progression of time has caused for him well.

Activity 4
in this last part of the extract we are introduced to some music during the sequence. my initial thoughts on this music is that is was loud and strange, this is because it had no variety to it and it wasn't ear candy. Also when i listened to the music more carefully i could tell that it was also sad, and could be related to as funeral music. this could link with what will happen at the end of his life, and that it isn't far away to his death.

Conclusion
the film maker builds up an atmosphere by the use of silence, he does this to maybe get the audience to concentrate more on what is happening in the actual screens, and also that death is quiet and peaceful, when you have died there is nothing, no noise no speaking, and this could be resembled in the use of silence.

there is a contrast in the sounds we are listening to, the silence can show us the peace in death and how after it is told to be calm. however with the loud disturbing scraping noises, and also the shocking sudden slams, this can foreshadow the pain and noise in death and what it does to you when your slowly dying and i believe this has been portrayed great.

Skins Analysis - Representation Of Age

In the first series of skins episode one our media class has watched the introduction to the episode, in this episode we have been introduced to Tony, Effy and their parents. We have been told to write an analysis on the representation of age.

To begin with the whole series of skins has been aimed at teenagers, it is a film full of teenagers who basically party and fight. Firstly the theme song in skins is unique, this is because the actual music isn’t a song, its just upbeat, fast paced music. It is also catchy and it’s not boring. Usually in a programme like this the theme tune would be chart music that teens would take a draw to, however skins has done the complete opposite of this but it has created a unique effect. Because the music is different, it can be seen that the programme is setting itself apart from other similar ones, creating an identity for itself. The music could still be seen, as specific music teenagers would like to listen to though.

When Tony gets out of bed and starts exercising in the montage of clips we are introduced to some electronic music, this could be seen as music that a teenager would typically listen too as well. This represents the current age and the target of teens.

When we are introduced to tony at the beginning we are shown he is laying in the middle of an immaculate bed, none of the sheets were crinkled it was as if he hadn’t slept in it, also on the duvet cover there is a naked man and woman, the character appear to be layed in between them, this could suggest he is confused about his sexuality, which links with his age because some teenagers are.

After doing weights and exercises Tony looks in the mirror and starts to tense and look at himself and smile, some could suggest he is full of himself for this but I believe this is a normal thing for a person to do after working out, and this can be seen as a stereotyped teenager, always cautious about how they look.

Another way Tony can be seen as a stereotyped image is by the way he constantly annoys his dad in the first scene. Most teenagers are stereotyped by the older generation as annoying, and this is exactly what Tony is doing to his Dad.

Another representation of age is shown when we see Tony’s rug on his floor, this is a very old fashioned ugly rug which he has on his floor, which any other teenager most probably wouldn’t want to have, this can make the audience see that Tony is different, and also, not into fashion. Another thing that backs up tony isn’t into fashion is from the clothes he is wearing, tony is infact wearing basic plain clothes, we are shown he is wearing, baggy chinos, plain top and a v neck jumper, this shows that he isn’t fussed about looking good, the fact he wants to be simple isn’t normal for somebody of his age which makes the audience think.

One more strange thing about tony is that all of the clothes in his draws and his room are perfect, for example the clothes are immaculately folded and his room is spotless. This is a binary opposite to a stereotyped teenager whose rooms would usually be known to be untidy. This shows us the character is quite peculiar.

When we are introduced to the character Effy we are shown a long shot of her walking towards her house, this scene can show us many things about the representation of ages. To begin we are shown Effy is wearing a mini skirt, and the kind of clothing anyone normal teenage girl would wear to go out, however she looks scruffy due to her makeup being smudged around her whole face and also her hair is messy, assuming its also the morning and she’s walking home dressed like this, it can put an assumption in our heads that she has been out all night partying. This is a representation of her teenage age. When Effy has eventually sneaked into the house and got into her school uniform we are shown her taking all her makeup off and looking neat, this makes the character in fact look a lot younger than before, and also when with her family she is shown to not speak for the whole time in the scene, this can suggest she has a split personality and wants to keep this away and not draw in attention.

We are shown more representation of age between Tony and his Dad. Tony’s dad is very foul mouthed and always swearing even when in the company of his family, this is funny to the audience however it gives a representation of the Dad not acting at his age, infact probably acting at his son’s age. 

Ali G In Da House

These are some funny clips from the film "ali g in da house". i have posted this onto the blog optionally because I find this film absolutely hilarious, the characters do little immature things which I find really amusing and I find this a good film, although the storyline isn't the greatest the film is still a 10/10 for humor.

The actor sacha baron cohen is a great famous actor, he is well known for the films Bruno and Borat. In this specific role he does a great job in playing Ali. This specific film is targeted at teenagers that are interested in comedy films. To anyone who hasn't seen this film I recommend it!

The budget of this film cost an estimated £5,000,000 and made a total gross of £10,170,7779, this is a good profit make for a film which isn’t looked upon as huge. The film was produced by film4, this is a subsidiary along for channel 4. It is owned by a conglomerate and they are a high success British film maker.
